The last time Law was seen on stage in the West End, he played Hamlet. That’s some leap away from the character of Matt Burke, a shipwrecked sailor saved by the crew of a barge, on which he finds Anna, whose life as a prostitute he learns to forgive.

In the new Donmar production, which launches in August, Anna is to be played by Ruth Wilson, most famous for taking the title role in the recent film version of Jane Eyre.

Wilson has also taken a main role at the Donmar before, playing Stella in the 2009 revival of A Streetcar Named Desire.

Anna Christie is part of a farewell season of plays for Donmar artistic director Michael Grandage. Other shows lined up for the season include Shakespeare’s Richard II and John Osborne’s Inadmissible Evidence.

“It is a very exciting and emotional moment to announce my farewell season,” said Grandage.

“From next month to February 2012 we will be presenting six new productions and I am delighted this final year celebrates so much of the repertoire we have presented over the last decade.”
