A Tale of Two Suns by Yoca Muta was commissioned by INIVA (Institute of International Visual Arts) and has been stunning passers-by since 8 December with nature themed sceneries and landscapes – illustrating a folktale from Sabah State in Malaysian Borneo.

The folktale also known as A Tale of two Suns speaks of a time when the ‘heat generated by two suns riding in the sky’ was so severe ‘it took a woman’s life’ – her husband then shot a dart from his blowpipe at a sun which then turned into a moon and eased the heat.

Up until Friday 19 December, the window display had illustrated the ‘before’ phase of the tale’s narrative with two bright suns shingling brightly. On 19 December, the eve of the Winter Solstice it was transformed to ‘after’ and the artwork was changed to depict two moons with a stunning moonscape.

Yoca Muta explores the idea of nature as a screen onto which we project our desires and longings – which makes the street facing window of Rivington Place a very poignant place to find oneself at the end of one year and the start of a new one. Come here to make your New Years Resolutions. The window or theatre set, if you like, creates a sense of depth by using layers of moveable objects such as a mountain, a tree and sun – suspended and floor based – to illustrate the folktale. The reflective surface of the window places the viewer and the surrounding buildings on Rivington Street within the dynamic composition.
