The search-engine giant has leased a seven-story office block on nearby Bonhill Road and is to join up with other tech companies to help realise the government’s dream of a hub to rival California’s Silicon Valley and the Silicon Fen around Cambridge.

“East London is already home to hundreds of innovative British start-ups, and has huge potential for economic growth and new jobs over the coming years,” said David Singleton, Google UK’s engineering chief.

“Finding a suitable building is the first major step, and we hope to announce more details about the organisations we’ll work with and how they will use the space in the coming months.”

As well as providing space for tech start-ups, Google’s new base is also set to host the company’s European PR events, such as launches of new products, hackathons and training sessions.
