BORIS JOHNSON’S bike hire scheme is set for launch next summer, after the Mayor agreed a deal yesterday with Serco, the transport group that runs the Docklands Light Railway.

This time next year, there will be 6,000 bikes available for hire, with 400 docking stations and 10,000 docking points dotted around central London.
“I’m sure that the cycling revolution taking place in the capital will rapidly become the envy of the world,” said Johnson.
Johnson, via Transport for London, and Serco have signed a six-year £140M deal for the bike scheme.
Some critics have hit out at the scheme’s cost and others have said that, as the bikes will be stationed in central London, they won’t be of much use to commuters.
That latter point is backed up by the revelation that none of the docking points will be outside stations, because bikes parked there would be too popular and therefore the docking points would often be empty. Cool logic.
