In the 1970s and 1980s, James J Bulger aka Whitey was one of the most notorious and feared underworld figures in Boston. He managed to lie low with his girlfriend and remained on the FBI’s most wanted list of fugitives until 2011 when he was finally captured in California and tried on numerous charges including 19 counts of murder. This documentary uses the subsequent trial as the framework for a portrait of Bulger, examining his role as an FBI informant and his supposed links to corrupt officials.
