On the fictional Hebridean island of Todday, news spreads like wildfire about a freighter that has run aground laden with 50,000 cases of "the water of life". Supplies of the drink have been depleted by wartime rationing so Captain Waggett from the Home Guard is keen to recover the cargo. However, English Sergeant Odd colludes with the islanders, including local shopkeeper Joseph Macroon, to conceal the booty. A battle of wits ensues between Waggett and the islanders.
