In the 28th century, gung-ho time-travelling agent Major Valerian and his partner Sergeant Laureline are enlisted to steal a rare creature known as a Converter, which possesses the ability to replicate anything it swallows, including jewels. The mission goes awry but Valerian and Laureline escape with the precious cargo and deliver the creature to Commander Arun Filitt aboard the space station Alpha. Soon after, supposedly extinct humanoids infiltrate Alpha and abduct Commander Arun Filitt.
