Born three years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Tony Takitani has grown up very much a loner: His mother died in childbirth and his father barely gave him the time of day. A chance encounter with the beautiful Eiko changes Tony’s life forever – he falls madly in love and the couple wed. Their marriage seems perfect, apart from Eiko’s obsession with fashion. As Japan moves into the economic boom of the mid-1980s, Eiko’s spending habits begin to irk Tony and he finally summons the courage to broach the matter, with unforeseen circumstances.
