Melussina is known as a “shamer” because she possesses the ability to look into the depths of people’s souls and compel them to feel ashamed about their transgressions. When the royal family is slaughtered, surviving son Nicodemus is presumed guilty. Melussina and her teenage daughter Dina, who has inherited her mother’s ability, both stare into Nicodemus’ soul and declare him innocent. The two shamers are subsequently flung into the dungeons while the crown prince’s scheming illegitimate half-brother, Drakan, attempts to seize the throne by force.
