Wladyslaw Szpilman is a popular Jewish pianist living in Warsaw with his close-knit family in 1939. When the Germans invade, the rest of the Szpilman clan are sent to concentration camps, but Wladyslaw manages to escape and hides out in the ruined buildings from enemy soldiers. For months, he manages to lay low and not draw any attention to himself, until a German captain discovers his hiding place.
