A merchant ship is lost at sea off the coast of Scotland and the only survivors are the captain, Oliver Gosling and two crew, Jim Bickley and Cailean Ferris. They seek refuge on a small island where they meet one of the locals, Fingal MacLeod, who doesn’t have enough room to provide the newcomers with lodgings for the night. Instead, Oliver, Jim and Cailean are taken to the home of Douglas Innis and his daughter Lanthe, who warn the newcomers to stay inside as darkness falls.
