Motorcycle courier Mardar is hired to guard Moudan, the daughter of a notorious black marketeer, and ferry her to and from her aunt’s house every afternoon. Following a bungled kidnapping plot, in which Mardar becomes embroiled, Moudan throws herself into the Suzhou River and is presumed drowned. Some years later, Mardar meets the girl’s spitting image, Meimei, who works in a Shanghai nightclub. Meimei claims to know nothing about the missing Moudan, but the similarities between the two are too striking to be a coincidence. Aren’t they?
