Warlord Hidetora Ichimonji divides his vast kingdom between three children: Taro, Jiro and Saburo. They are allocated castles and ranks depending on their age, with Taro taking charge of the Ichimonji clan in his father’s stead. Youngest child Saburo, who has always preferred violence to diplomacy, is subsequently banished by Hidetora and aligns himself with rival warlord Fujimaki. Meanwhile, Jiro’s embittered wife Lady Kaede, whose entire family was massacred by Hidetora, plots her revenge.
