Michel lives in a cramped room in Paris, from where he plots to realise his dreams by picking the pockets of the city’s well-to-do denizens and tourists. A momentary distraction comes in the form of his friend’s lover Jeanne. She tells him that his mother is dying but Michel is too absorbed in his nefarious activities to visit, daring the police to catch him in the act.
