Colle refuses to subject her beloved daughter Amsatou to the female circumcision ceremony conducted by the doyenne and her cronies. The men, and some of the other female villagers, are enraged by Colle’s audacity, even more so when she agrees to shelter four other girls, who have escaped the ‘purification’. Colle invokes “moolaade”, a rite of protection which grants the children safety as long as they remain within the coloured yarn tied across the entrance to the compound.
