French pilots Captain de Boeldieu and Lieutenant Marechal are held as German prisoners of war during the First World War. They quickly bond with their fellow prisoners and help to dig an escape tunnel. Moved from one camp to the next, the French aviators eventually end up at Wintersborn, where they are reunited with old friend Rosenthal under the watchful eye Captain von Rauffenstein – the very same man who shot them down. A daring escape bid has dramatic repercussions.
