Thor Heyerdahl is an adventurer and ethnographer, who disputes the prevailing theory of the era that people from the west migrated to Polynesia. He believes instead that people from South America settled in Polynesia. To prove his theory, Heyerdahl constructs a large balsa wood raft using materials that would have been available to the indigenous people 1500 years ago and embarks on the 4300 nautical mile journey from Peru to Polynesia across the Pacific Ocean.
