Lucky Kunene is a South African teenager at the time when Nelson Mandela is released from prison and elected president, bringing to an end the years of apartheid. In order to pay for a college education, Lucky turns to crime and he joins a gang comprised largely of men involved in the anti-apartheid movement. As he gets older, Lucky tries to stay on the straight and narrow but his business ventures still cause friction with the local police force.
