Ex-professional tennis player Tony Wendice discovers his wife Margot has been having an affair with an American writer called Mark Halliday. Incensed by this betrayal, Tony concocts an elaborate scheme to murder Margot by blackmailing petty criminal C.A. Swann into committing the heinous crime. Tony explains that he will take Mark out for the night, leaving Margot at home, where the petty criminal can strangle her and stage the scene as a burglary gone tragically awry.
