Aram Khachaturian's passionate ballet, choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich after the novel by Raffaelo Giovagnolli, was first performed by the Bolshoi in 1958 and the stirring production returns to Moscow, recorded live on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. A triumphal procession marks the return to Rome of consul Crassus. Among his chained prisoners are Spartacus and his wife Phrygia, who are condemned to lives in slavery.
