The former couple – who broke off their engagement and 10-year on-off relationship in August – will sit down for a heart-to-heart chat for the first time since their split, with Lauren admitting it devastates her to see her former flame starting a new romance with co-star Sam Faiers.

However, while the pair are open with their affection for each other, they decide they are better off as friends.

Mark says: “Every time we argue it gets me down and I can’t see you hurt anymore. I don’t know how you’ll take this but I’m telling you this for the future, I love you – but I don’t love you like that anymore.”

Lauren explains: “It breaks my heart to see you with a girl, it breaks my heart, but I’ll never go back with you ever again. I love you but I don’t like you!

“We both know now it’s over. You mean the world to me and I hope in the future we will see each other and be friends.”

Before declaring their love for each other one final time, the pair decide to go their separate ways, with Mark laying down future plans with Sam later in the episode.

Meanwhile, TOWIE bosses have told the current cast this year’s Christmas special will be the last time they ever film together.

With Mark quitting the ITV2 reality show to go in to the jungle for I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, series chiefs are concerned a number of stars have become too famous for the programme.

An ITV spokesperson said: “It’s a constantly evolving show.”

The TOWIE season finale airs on ITV2 at 10pm tonight (09.11.11).
