The Queen has advertised for a butler full of “passion” for the job, but aims to pay her new servant just a fraction over the minimum wage.

The 85-year-old monarch is looking for a “hard-working, flexible and positive” butler for Buckingham Palace who must be willing to spend at least three months of the year at her other residences including Windsor Castle and Holyroodhouse in Scotland.
The job will pay £15,000 per year for a 45 hour working week. Working the same number of hours at minimum wage rates of £6.08 an hour would bring in £14,227 annually.
Due to higher prices in London than elsewhere in the UK, the Greater London Authority encourages firms to pay at least the London Living Wage rate of £8.30 an hour, equivalent to earnings of £19,422 a year.
The advertisement on the website royal.gov.uk, states:
“We are recruiting a Footman to join our highly experienced team.
“You will carry out a wide range of responsibilities from messenger and valeting duties to food and beverage service.
According to the personal specification section of the advertisement, the Queen is looking for people who “have a passion for the Hospitality and Catering industry and some practical hospitality, catering or customer service experience, thrive in a busy, team focused environment, are enthusiastic, show initiative and are keen to learn and progress their careers and have a hard-working, flexible and positive attitude.”
