SIMON COWELL reportedly wants to produce a remake of 1970s classic movie Saturday Night Fever, with Zac Ephron taking the role of Tony made famous by John Travolta.

“Simon has been looking into buying the rights for years and opened discussions with [rights’ owner] Robert [Stigwood] about the remake,” a source told The Sun.

“The charm offensive has been in full swing and they made a breakthrough over the last couple of weeks.”

As well as Ephron, another big name reckoned to be key to the project is Timbaland, who has been earmarked to write or adapt the music.

The original score was written by the Bee Gees in their disco incarnation and, as well as the title song, included monster hits like How Deep is Your Love?, Staying Alive and More Than a Woman.

“Simon has been drawing up a list of people he wants to get involved. When that meets Robert’s expectations, the contracts will be signed,” added the source.

One scene we hope they keep in has Tony and his father sitting down to an Italian-American family evening meal.

Dad’s temper is always on the boil around Tony’s insolence, but all hell breaks loose when the wayward son dares to complain about the pasta.

“Your mudda’s spaghetti don’t drip! Your mudda’s spaghetti don’t drip!” he explodes.
