The husband-and-wife team – who are best known for presenting This Morning between 1988 and 2001, followed by talk show Richard & Judy from 2001 to 2009 – are enjoying their retirement from daytime TV and made a pact to not to work together again.
Madeley explained to The Sun: “We literally shook hands. I can’t see us hosting a show together again.
“We used to spend every minute of every day together. That doesn’t happen anymore, but it hasn’t changed anything between us. The relationship feels exactly the same, emotionally, as it always did.”
Madeley – now a presenter on BBC Radio 2 – says his wife is adamant she won’t return to broadcasting and was a reluctant presenter during their time on the hit daytime shows.
As for himself, the TV presenter reveals he has turned down two offers to front daytime TV since Richard & Judy ended.
He said: “That would lock me into a studio five days a week. I’d be back on the hamster wheel. We did 21 years and it was great. But I’d never go back to that. I’ve done it and I’ve got nothing to prove to myself or to anyone else.”
However, one show he would like to appear on is BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
The presenter has been approached for the glitzy dancing competition several times but couldn’t commit to the show’s schedule.
He added: “I would take it very seriously because I’m competitive, but I’d have to be free from October to Christmas and so far, the last five or six years they’ve asked me, I haven’t been.”
