R. Kelly’s defence team have rested their case after two days of evidence.

The defence offered no surprise witnesses or presented any new evidence, instead relying on discrediting the prosecution’s case which alleges Kelly had sex with a 13-year-old girl and was captured on video engaging in the illegal act.

His attorneys claimed the singer could not be the man in the footage because a mole on the unidentifiable male’s back appears and disappears throughout the clip.

Among the 12 witnesses called to give evidence were three family members of the alleged victim, who all testified it wasn’t her in the footage. Neither Kelly – real name Robert – nor his alleged victim took the witness stand.

The jury only sat in court for a few minutes yesterday (09.06.08) before being sent home by Judge Vincent Gaughan after no witnesses were called to appear.

Two rebuttal witnesses are due to be called by prosecutors today (10.06.08) and deliberations are predicted to begin this Thursday (12.06.08).

If found guilty, Kelly – who reportedly looked “relaxed” yesterday – faces up to 14 years in jail.
