The Purple Rain singer is set to be asked to perform at the event in Somerset, England, to replace rapper Jay-Z, who has seemingly cancelled his appearance to play London’s O2 Wireless festival instead.

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis almost managed to persuade Prince to headline the event in 2004, but plans fell through at the last minute.

The flamboyant musician is said to be a popular choice among fans after he wowed audiences during his 21-night residency at London’s O2 arena last year.

Eavis has angered Jay-Z fans after it was claimed he and the other organisers were aware of the hip-hop star’s intentions to cancel before tickets went on sale on Sunday.

A source said: “If they knew he didn’t want to play before tickets went on sale that seems unfair to people who bought tickets just because they wanted to see Jay-Z.”

Eavis – who was expected to personally introduce Jay-Z onto the main Pyramid Stage – has insisted the rapper is still on the bill to perform.

He said: “I spoke to his people this weekend. Everything is fine. I’m excited.”

Other headliners at this year’s festival – which runs from June 27 to 29 – are Kings Of Leon and The Verve.
