The broadcaster has won the rights to the updated US soap opera, which will star original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray, who reprise their roles as wealthy JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen, though the programme is expected to focus on the Ewing family’s offspring.

90210 actor Josh Henderson – who appeared as a child in the original series – will play JR’s son John Ross, while former Desperate Housewives star Jesse Metcalfe (pictured) has been cast as Bobby’s son Christopher.

Channel 5 director of programmes Jeff Ford said: “With its alluring mix of wealth, seduction, scandal and intrigue, there is something for everyone on the Southfork Ranch. It is an exciting addition to our 2012 schedule.”

US programme makers have stated the new show will be “not so much a remake, more a continuation.”

The 10-part series will be broadcast next year and focuses on the disputes between John Ross and Bobby over how to continue the family empire.

The original Dallas ran from 1978 to 1991 on US network CBS and was broadcast to huge UK audiences on the BBC.
