LONDON has stepped in to save the Michael Jackson tribute concert originally planned for Vienna, after a series of organisational mix-ups down Austria way.

The gig, backed by the Jackson family, was meant to be the world’s main Jacko tribute and was scheduled for the 26th of this month. Thousands of tickets have already been sold.

But a series of damaging stories about the lack of big names willing to make the trip to central Europe for the event have dogged proceedings.

Now, promoter Georg Kindel says he needs more time to organise things and has switched the tribute to London’s Wembley stadium sometime next June, a year after Jacko himself was due to play at the O2.

The purpose for this show is to give something back to the fan,” said Jermaine Jackson.

“We have to do this right.”

Another factor thought to have influenced the venue change is the breakdown in talks between Kindel and the Vienna authorities, who looked at one point like backing the event to the tune of £500,000.

“Not a cent will be given to the promoter,” said Vienna’s deputy mayor Renate Brauner.

Tickets for the June concerts at Wembley are set to go on sale on 1 December.
