The Spice Girl, who is one of 12 celebrities signed up to compete in the fifth series of the US TV dance contest, clashed heads with professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy while practicing the cha cha cha but managed to recover in time to impress the judges with a “feisty” performance.

Judge Bruno Tonioli called Mel – who was wearing a skimpy sparkling leopard-print outfit – a “feisty kitten” but admitted he is worried Maksim won’t be able to tame her and take control on the dancefloor.

Judge Len Goodman praised Mel’s hip action and said it was a well-performed routine, while Carrie Ann Inaba admitted: “You’re a much better dancer than I thought you would be.”

The panel awarded Mel 24 points out of 30. The Spice Girl will find out if she has made it through to the second round of the competition tomorrow night (26.09.07).

Mel, who is set to tour with the Spice Girls in December, admits dancing with her bandmates is very different to performing routines on Dancing with the Stars and she is taking the competition very seriously.

She said: “Dancing with the Spice Girls was very different – it was a lot more step, dig, step, dig.

“If I messed up with the Spice Girls I’d turn round to Victoria (Beckham) or Geri (Halliwell) and we’d laugh.

“If you mess up on here you get points deducted and you get kicked off. Why am I doing this?

“It’s important that I do well because the main competition for me is in my head, so I’ll let myself down and I’ll let my dance partner down.”

The Cheetah Girl’s singer Sabrina Bryan wowed judges with her cha cha cha and topped the leader board with an impressive 26 points out of 30.
