Britain’s first woman Prime Minister was legendary for carrying her black Asbury handbag to top level meetings, where she was said to have used it to emphasise her points.

So famous did her use of the handbag become, that noun turned to verb and the term “handbagging” was born, as in: “Maggie gave those dastardly Europeans a proper handbagging”.

“My handbags did good service in cabinet,” Lady Thatcher once said.

The auction of the Thatcher handbag takes place on Monday 27 June at Christie’s. All proceeds to the Breast Cancer Care charity.
