The 21-year-old actress decided to avoid being nominated for one of the prestigious accolades, insisting her appearance on hit US TV show Ugly Betty was too “brief” to warrant an award.

Lindsay’s representative said: “The appearance was brief so we made a decision to wait.”

The Mean Girls star appeared in one episode of Ugly Betty as lead character Betty Suarez’s high-school classmate, Kimberly. She is rumoured to have signed on for a recurring role in the show when it returns next season.

Lindsay’s decision follows the announcement earlier this week that Grey’s Anatomy actress Katherine Heigl had pulled out of the awards race, blasting the show’s writers for the material she was given.

Katherine – who won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Dr. Isobel Stevens in the medical drama last year – said: “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organisation, I withdrew my name from contention.

“In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.”
