Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon only takes a shower “twice a decade”.

The 51-year-old rocker – who has reunited with his former bandmates to perform at London’s Brixton Academy tonight (08.11.07) – only ever sings when he is in the shower and his infrequent washing means his vocal chords are badly out of practice.

He said: “I haven’t done a lot of performing in the last three years. But I sing whenever I’m in the shower – which is about twice a decade.”

Lydon admits he was shocked when the band were forced to add further dates after their one-off Brixton concert to mark the 30th anniversary of their iconic album ‘Never Mind the B*****ks’ sold out in minutes.

He said: “When we decided to reunite for the concert in Brixton we thought 5,000 might turn up, but it turned out to be a bigger monster than any of us had any concept of.

“It’ll be awfully tiring on the old tonsils, and we’re not the fittest chaps on the block.”

The group – Lydon, guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock and drummer Paul Cook – will play Brixton Academy again on Saturday (10.11.07), Monday (12.11.07) and Wednesday (14.11.07). They will then perform at Manchester’s MEN Arena on 17 November and Glasgow’s SECC on 18 November.

Lydon claims the band hasn’t rehearsed much ahead of the shows, insisting “you can’t prepare for telling the truth”.

He also blasted Californian soft-rock band The Eagles, who have just reunited for the release of Long Road out of Eden, their first new album in 28 years.

Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten, said: “They’re irrelevant. A band like that doesn’t write songs that mean anything. Our music means something. We’re like The Charge of the Light Brigade, with decent generals, right?”
