THE ALBUM John Lennon signed for Mark Chapman hours before Chapman shot the ex-Beatle dead in 1980 is up for sale, guide price £535,000.

“The album is the most extraordinary artefact in rock ‘n’ roll history,” said Bob Zafian of Moments in Time, the auction website arranging the sale.

“We are very excited to bring such a historically significant piece to the market.”

Zafian said the unnamed seller would be worried for his safety should his identity be disclosed.

“He doesn’t want to be named because he received death threats,” said Zafian.

On the fateful day in New York in December 1980, Chapman got Lennon to sign a copy of Double Fantasy, returned with a gun five hours later and apparently left the album outside the gates of the Dakota building (pictured), Lennon’s residence at the time.
