Vivid Entertainment Group is selling a 45-minute film, which includes an 11-minute clip of a naked man, who they claim is the dead rocker, having sex with two mystery brunettes in a dimly-lit hotel room.
Vivid, who also released the infamous sex tapes of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee and another starring Kim Kardashian, claim the 40-year-old footage was unearthed by a memorabilia collector at a London auction and was verified by
a private detective.
Steven Hirsch, Vivid’s co-chairman, said: “I believe that we did our due diligence, and as a result of that clearly believe that it’s him. If [the detective] said that it wasn’t him, I would never have put it out.”
Jimi Hendrix the Sex Tape includes commentary from two people who had met the guitarist, who died in 1970, aged just 27, after choking on his own vomit following a drink and drugs binge.
Pamela Des Barres, the author of I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie and Cynthia Albritton – better known as Cynthia Plaster Caster because of her penchant for taking moulds of rock stars’ penises – both claim the man in the video is definitely Hendrix.
Cythia said: “I’m 100 per cent sure it’s him. The facial bone structure is the same. The eyebrows and the moustache are true to the style he was wearing in 1970.”
However, a former girlfriend of the rocker has cast doubt over the authenticity of the footage. Kathy Etchingham, who dated Hendrix in the 60s, said: “It is not him. His face is too broad and nose and nostrils too wide for Jimi. Also the hair is too low on the forehead.
“He would never have allowed anyone to see that. In private he was very shy and would cover up.”
The authenticity of the film – which first appeared for sale on eBay last year – has also been questioned by fans and historians.
Charles R. Smith, author of the Hendrix biography Room Full of Mirrors said he had seen the footage while researching the book but dismissed it, saying: “It doesn’t add up to Jimi.”
