The 26-year-old star will don a spaceman’s outfit and take part in a lunar expedition for his latest Hollywood blockbuster.

The space adventure will see the Zodiac star join a group of pioneers who are determined to become the first people to build a colony on the moon.

The movie will be directed by Mr. and Mrs. Smith filmmaker Doug Liman and is yet to be given a title.

The script was originally penned by Liman with the help of Along Came Polly director John Hamburg, but it will now be rewritten by Black Hawk Down scribe Mark Bowden.

Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal has also signed up to appear in Brothers opposite Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman.

Brothers is based on an award-winning 2004 Danish film of the same name in which a young man comforts his older brother’s wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan.

The film will be directed by Get Rich or Die Tryin’ filmmaker Jim Sheridan. Shooting is expected to begin next month.
