“These outstanding box office numbers are another testament to the universal appeal of JK Rowling’s stories,” said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, of Warner Bros, the film’s distributors.

The Half-Blood Prince opened in 20 countries this week and raced to the top of the charts all over the place.

Nearly half the $104M (£63.7M) bonanza, $58M (£35.7M), was earned in the US and Canada, but even that haul was only enough to leave it fourth in the North American opening 24 hours list.

Last year’s The Dark Knight, 2007’s Spider-Man 3 and last month’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are all just ahead.

In Britain, the new Potter made £4.7M ($7.6M), putting it well ahead next most lucrative in the series, the third, which bagged £3M ($5M) in its first 24 hours of release.
