The 71-year-old star – who applied for the license yesterday (17.06.08) – plans to marry his partner of 21 years, Brad Altman later this year.

Takei said: “We are first and foremost delighted. It’s a landmark day. It’s going to be the only day like this in our lives and it is the only day like this in the history of America.

“I think it’s a glorious California morning to make history. Congratulations to all of us. May equality live long and prosper.”

The ceremony will take place on September 14 at Los Angeles’ Japanese American National Museum.

The Californian Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriages last month. Yesterday was the first day couples could obtain a license.

Speaking about the moment he received the documents, George said: “I started singing One Singular Sensation. Brad said ‘I love you’ and I looked at him and said, ‘I love you.'”
