The TV writer and producer – best known for his work on the war-based sitcom, as well as Are You Being Served? Hi-de-Hi! and Allo Allo! – died peacefully in his sleep earlier today (27.09.11) at his holiday home in Portugal.

In a statement posted on his official website, his family said: “The family of comedy legend David Croft OBE are sad to report that David died peacefully in his sleep at his house in Portugal earlier today.

“He was a truly great man, who will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing and loving him. We know that he would have been proud that you had all been watching.”

As well as his work on a whole host of television classics, David was famous for his You Have Been Watching photo captions at the end of his shows.

The TV legend – who leaves behind wife Ann and seven children – was one of the only writers who also directed his work.

Dad’s Army – starring Bill Pertwee and Arthur Lowe – is still being shown on TV some 40 years after it was originally written.
