The 30-year-old actor claims Madonna is unfairly criticised for her belief in Kabbalah, a mystical offshoot of Judaism – which he and wife Demi Moore are also said to believe in – and thinks she should get more credit for her charity work.

Speaking at the premiere of new film What Happens in Vegas in Leicester Square last night (22.04.08), he said: “Madonna has a project in Malawi where she has genuinely affected the lives of about 250,000 children who are orphaned. I think that’s a pretty generous person, not someone who should be criticised. That sort of generosity is pretty admirable.”

In 2006, Madonna caused controversy when she adopted David Banda, now two years old, from the African country of Malawi. It was alleged she had used her fame and influence to fast-track the adoption without adhering to the proper regulations.

Madonna’s Raising Malawi charity funds seven orphanages across the country, including the Orphan Care Centre in the village of Mphandula, which is home to more than 4,000 children.
