The story of the Playboy model who married a soon-to-die billionaire, fought a long battle over his will and then met death herself thanks to a drug overdose is the stuff of melodrama, but the new opera’s makers are keen to avoid going over the top.

“It is not going to be tawdry; it is going to be witty, clever, thoughtful and sad,” Elaine Padmore, director of opera at the ROH, told The Guardian.

“Just because a life has been in the tabloids does not mean it must be treated in a tawdry way on stage.”

The opera’s libretto is to be written by Richard Thomas, one of those involved in Jerry Springer: The Opera and the music created by Mark-Anthony Turnage.

Smith’s blond bombshell image was inspired by Marilyn Monroe and, as chance would have it, there’s a musicalabout her coming to London soon, with tickets available now.
