O Brothers! – 31 Oct – 30 December
BFI London Southbank
To complement the release of Burn After Reading, the BFI Southbank will host a timely retrospective of films by Joel and Ethan Coen. The brothers have long been recognised as film-makers who riff on classical Hollywood and so to accompany the screenings of their films will be a number of familiar titles from Preston Sturges, Frank Capra and Nicholas Ray and many more. We’re playing Blood Simple with The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), a film with which it resonates strongly at some times and grates interestingly at others. Pairing each Coen film with a studio picture is intended less to demonstrate a direct – than to facilitate conversations, between the films themselves, and between viewers.
This competition is now closed. The winners are as follow:
Andy Smith, Bristol, BS30
Natalie Stewart, Nottinghamshire, NG17
Jonathan Pope, London, N5
