Nelly Senff and her young son Alexej attempt to relocate from East to West Germany in 1978. They seek sanctuary at the Marienfelde Refugee Center where mother and son are gifted clothes, food and a roof over their heads, but they cannot fully integrate into the West without collecting a series of stamps from various government departments, who all seem to conspire against Nelly. Adding to her paranoia and sense of injustice, a wily CIA agent repeatedly interrogates Nelly about her child’s father.
