The lifeless body of Mona Bergeron rests on frozen ground, finally at peace. In a series of overlapping flashbacks, we meet the last people to encounter Mona on her travels after she abandons her middle-class parents and secretarial training to wander around the countryside with just a knapsack full of belongings and her wits. En route, Mona meets various people who exploit or help her including a goatherd and his wife, who offer her shelter from the elements in a trailer.
