A young American woman called Jane Callahan travels across the frozen wastes of late 19th century eastern Europe, final destination Russia. En route, she shares her compartment with a number of dashing army cadets, one of whom, Andrey Tolstoy, wins her heart. Like her, he is passionate and shares the same love for music. For the next ten years, she pursues her career as an assistant to her entrepreneur father, hoping to meet once more with the man of her dreams, now exiled to Siberia because of his political beliefs.
