When his mother May falls ill, ambitious journalist Kenny returns home to a close-knit Scottish community to take care of his 21-year-old sister Roberta, who has Down Syndrome and has lived at home her entire life. May is suffering with terminal cancer and does not have long; she is understandably keen to put her affairs in order and make plans for Roberta's future. She entrusts the young woman's safety to Kenny but he is too busy with his career.
