The Nazis are beginning to invade Paris. Cabinet minister Jean-Etienne Beaufort decides to flee the city with his current lover, seductive actress Viviane Denvers. They head for Bordeaux where the past catches up with Viviane – namely childhood ami Frederic, who gladly went to jail to prove his love for her, and influential journalist Alex Winckler. Meanwhile, Jewish professor Kopolski and his young assistant Camille desperately try to smuggle a deadly consignment of heavy water out of the capital.
