During a Russian naval exercise, the Kursk submarine erupts in flames and the majority of the crew are killed. The stricken vessel sinks to the bottom of the sea, condemning Russian Captain Mikhail Averin and crew to a grim fate as flames devour the remaining oxygen. A UK Navy operation led by Captain David Russell offers support but the Russian government refuses assistance until mounting public pressure becomes impossible to ignore.
