Meena lives with her traditional Punjabi parents in the exotic surroundings of a rural English village during the 1970s. She is torn between her family's culture and the escape offered by the rock and roll of the era. Trouble looms large when Meena befriends young tearaway, Anita, who loves to tease the boys and to thieve from the local sweet shop. The girls form an unlikely bond, but upcoming secondary school entrance exams and the domestic abuse suffered by Anita's mother threaten to tear the girls apart.
