Meryl Streep thanks ABBA for the music as she wins one of film's National Movie Awards
MAMMA MIA! was the big winner at last night's National Movie Awards in London (08.09.08).
The ceremony, hosted by comedy actor James Nesbitt at the Royal Festival Hall, saw the hit ABBA-inspired musical take home two prizes - Best Musical and Best Performance, Female for its star Meryl Streep.
Accepting her award, Streep said: "Thank you very much, I love you too much. It means you love the movie and I loved the movie. I want to thank Benny and Bjorn for the songs, which kept me dancing way past when I should have been."
ABBA were a Swedish pop group - Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Faltskog - who enjoyed worldwide success in the 70s and 80s.
Other winners on the night - voted for by the British public - included The Dark Knight which scooped the award for Best Superhero film. Christian Bale reprised his role as Batman for the summer blockbuster, which also starred the late Heath Ledger.
Johnny Depp was awarded Best Performance, Male for his leading role in dark musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, scooped the prize for Best Action/Adventure film. Both lead actor Harrison Ford - sporting a moustache - and director Stephen Spielberg sent recorded acceptance speeches for the award. Juno, which garnered four Oscar nominations earlier this year, won the prize for Best Comedy.
Animated adventure Wall-E was named Best Family film.
A host of stars attended including Nicole Kidman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Statham, Chris Noth, Kylie Minogue and Harry Potter star Emma Watson.
The event also saw the world premiere of the trailer for Quantum of Solace, the latest James Bond film, featuring Daniel Craig in the title role.
The National Movie Awards will be shown on Britain's ITV1 channel at 9pm tonight (09.09.08).
