Southbank Sinfonia

Works by Caroline Shaw, Glass, Dave Heath, Lou Harrison and Graham Fitkin.

The orchestra performs Caroline Shaw's Valencia Quartet, Glass's Wall Street, a piece by Dave Heath, Lou Harrison's Music For Remy and Graham Fitkin's Distil.

Round off our afternoon of chamber concerts with some bite-sized music from across the Atlantic. Caroline Shaw's zesty Valencia Quartet grows out of the nourishing soils of old masters and celebrates the simple beauty of nature's fruitful offering. In the first of two contrasting depictions of New York, native Philip Glass takes us down an unusually quiet Wall Street with the shimmering facades bouncing light all around. read less The second, more sinister, piece is by British composer Dave Heath, depicting the overpowering 'size, energy, and weirdness' of the Big Apple. A solitary oboe weaves around drums, bells and gongs, filling the air with an Eastern aroma in Lou Harrison's Music for Remy, a perfectly crafted sparseness mirrored in Graham Fitkin's Distil. Mix and match with the two other concerts in the same afternoon to sample something new.
